CRN Auction, Inc. of Cambridge, MA will be conducting an outstanding estates auction on Sunday, January 6th starting at 11a.m. at their gallery. CRN Auctions generally runs three or four quality sales annually and is pleased to start of the New Year with this fine sale and a positive attitude.
There will be approximately 425 items ranging from the 17th to the 20th century from various New England estates and collections consisting of American, European and other works of art; English, Italian and other Continental furniture and accessories; American and European silver; and Chinese furniture and accessories.
CRN always offers a universal diversity of artwork. Highlights of the European paintings include a 20th c. bold and colorful abstract oil on canvas by the French artist Bernard Cathelin (1919-2004), and an impressionistic coastal oil of the Cote d'Azure by Adolphe Gaussen (1871-1954). There are several Italian and Continental old masters, and Latin America is represented by two large 18th century Spanish Colonial cuzco paintings, as well as a small figural painting by the well-known Uruguay artist Pedro Figari (1861-1938). This painting, as well as other items inc. polychromed carved santos and silver, came from the home of a Portsmouth Rhode Island woman who lived in Peru for many years, and was a friend of Figari's grandaughter. American paintings offered at this sale include an early and vivid oil of Gloucester Harbor by Emile Gruppe (1896-1978), as well as a Gloucester street scene by Paul Cornoyer (1864-1923). A small oil of Blue Hill by Abbott Thayer (1849-1921) is a charming example by an artist that does not surface that often.
A varied and appealing mixture of 17th, 18th and 19th century accessories and furniture will be offered which should motivate buyers. There is an abundance of Italian items including a very colorful 18th century Venetian two-part secretary still maintaining its original paint. There are several commodes from a variety of periods, pairs of columns, chairs, wall sconces, mirrors, urns, santos, and reliquaries, all in original or old paint and surface.
French items include an important 18th century inlaid commode with fine ormolu mounts stamped by the noted French cabinetmaker Jean Francois Leleu (1729-1807). There are also French pairs of chairs, porcelains, mirrors, and pairs of candelabrum. Other Continental items include two 17th century Spanish inlaid varguenos.
English items include a smashing pair of Adams-style inlaid satinwood cabinets with fine painted decoration in the manner of Angelica Kauffman. There are two George III inlaid sideboards, a fine 18th century mahogany silver table; tea tables, a collection of Georgian and Regency tea caddies, and a pair of inlaid knife urns.
Oriental carpets both of roomsize and scatter size will be sold including 19th century Caucasian scatters, and an antique ivory roomsize Serapi. A large oversize Persian blue Kashan, in perfect condition, comes from a North Shore estate.
CRN Auctions regularly contain Asian items from collectors and local homes. A 19th c. Chinese scholar's table screen comes from a Rhode Island gentleman, which he inherited from his grandmother's collection. It is comprised of a panel mounted with a cloisonné vase with ivory and hardstone flowers, a jade animal, and a coral branch, mounted in a carved hardwood stand. Also featured, is a 19th c. large and magnificently carved hardwood marble-top center table with oversized claw and ball feet. As always at CRN, there wi1l be 18th and 19th century Chinese Export porcelains.
Previews at the CRN gallery are Thursday and Friday, January 3rd and 4th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, January 5th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also the auction may be previewed anytime by appointment.
