ATLANTA, Ga. – Around 1,000 lots of quality, fresh merchandise in a wide array of categories – fine art by noted listed artists, wonderful period and modern furniture pieces, a collection of antique tortoiseshell items, decorative accessories and more – will be sold the weekend of Aug. 9-10 by Ahlers & Ogletree, in the firm’s gallery at 715 Miami Circle (Suite 210) in Atlanta.

Start times for both days of the Summer Estates Auction will be 11 a.m., Eastern time. This will be yet another packed auction for Ahlers & Ogletree, a firm that has made its mark in a short time as one of the top auction houses in the Southeast. For instance, the recent June 6-8 auction was expanded by a day to accommodate the many lots. Quality items poured in, to the delight of eager bidders.

Fine artwork will be a headliner category in the Aug. 9-10 sale. Two works by the noted Swiss-born (but well-traveled) painter Theo Meier (1908-1982) will be offered. One is an oil on canvas titled Balinese Female Nude (1945), 25 ½ inches by 23 ¼ inches (unframed). The other is a 1950 pencil on paper rendering titled Sketch of a Young Balinese Woman. Both are signed and dated.

Two oil on canvas paintings by the British painter Christopher Le Brun (b. 1951) will also come up for bid. The first is a contemporary abstract painting with imagery of a gray horse in a muted architectural landscape, titled Day Painting (2007). The second is a contemporary painting with abstract imagery suggesting overgrown plant life, titled Trance (2005). Both are signed and dated.

The period furniture category will feature an early 20th century French mahogany and gilt metal mounted Empire-style sofa with custom silk upholstery, 78 ¼ inches wide; an American marble-top Empire-style pier table; a marble-top bombe chest with wine cork motif, an Empire-style ormolu mounted mahogany armchair; and a mahogany and satinwood inlaid flip-top game table.

Mid-century modern furniture will include an important “Longitude” chaise longue made by Maya Lin (Am., b. 1959, the designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.) for Knoll International (1998), with maple wood rectangular frame below an undulating plywood top; a set of four “Diamond” wire lounge chairs in black enameled steel, made by Harry Bertoia (It./Am., 1915-1978) for Knoll International; and a set of seven “Series 7” chairs by Arne Jacobsen (Denm., 1902-1971) for Fritz Hansen, with the 1998 Hansen label.

Also sold will be furniture pieces by Paul McCobb and Heywood Wakefield.

The large and fine collection of 19th century hand-painted ladies’ fans comes from a private collection out of Rabun Gap, Ga. The same collector has also consigned a strong grouping of antique tortoiseshell items (boxes, calling card cases, an inkwell, dance cards, etc.). From a different Georgia collector comes a large collection of Herend “Rothschild Bird” porcelain.

Returning to artwork, an abstract surrealist color lithograph by the renowned Spanish artist Joan Miro (1893-1983), titled Altamira (1958), pencil signed and numbered (“25/75”), is certain to spark a fierce bidding war. Also sold will be an oil on wood panel by the Austrian artist Raphael Ambros (1854-1895), titled The Kitten Seller (1883), showing a girl with a blanket full of kittens.

A pastel on paper work depicting a dark blue sky and ground with the sun rising on the horizon, by Jules Olitski (Am., 1922-2007), titled August Tenth, signed and dated (1995) upper left, is expected to wow the crowd, as will an oil on wood panel by French artist Armand Désiré Gautier (1825-1894), titled Five French Nuns Strolling on Normandy Coast, artist-signed.

A Greek-style, finely rendered carved stone sculptural fragment of a classically styled nude male satyr (part human, part animal), 11 inches tall (including the base) rounds out the artwork category. But speaking of art, a beautifully hand-colored and engraved antique map (second state), executed by the Dutch cartographer Justus Danckerts (1635-1701), showing an early view of America (to include one of the first depictions of Philadelphia), is a work of art in its own right.

Rounding out just some of the sale’s expected top lots are two large mid-16th century leather-bound books and a lathe-turned and varnished wild cherry center bowl, carved by the artisan Ed Moulthrop (Ga., 1916-2003). The wide body bowl, situated above a squat circular foot, is stamped, signed and wood indicated.
