Humor, irony and a lifelong fascination on the arts are Eckhard Besuden’s typical attributs. Influenced by his mother, an artist who taught him in painting techniques, he was involved in the process of painting since his childhood. Born in 1964, Eckhard Besuden describes himself as a follower of Antideterminismus.

This movement is characterized by the fact that conventional quality characteristics in the evaluation of contemporary art, such as uniqueness, freshness, authenticity and recognition as well as an artist’s biography including certifications and diplomas are wholly unimportant for an artist. No doubt, Eckhard Besuden loves to rebel in the art market, he wants to rough up any state of saturation and stagnancy.

Nevertheless, also a rebel is following ideals, when he mentions: “I like Hagen Betzwieser, Anna Gierster, Karl Hans Janke, Per Olaf Schmidt, none of whom have yet exploited their potential. Well, to speak frankly, I love them all.” Eckhard Besuden is not handling or finalizing the only one style. He rejects the cult of genius and tries to escape from any rules of the art market. The consciousness of irony and openness in controverse meanings, which is expressed in his attitude, could be understood as an invitation to confront with the postmodern movement.

Certainly his experiments with clichéd motifs and puns, cut outs of Old Master Jan Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pear Earring” or Cosima von Bonin motifs are not simply due musings but rather an irrepressible curiosity to explore the limits of painting and in doing so to use an independent plurality of styles.

Eckhard Besuden specializes in the confusion. This German artist is a cross between a slob-provocateur and a brutish aesthete. His “Blue Bunny Snorkeling” is just right for a moment when everybody is tired of art stars but most people have no idea where else to turn. Compared with other German painters with enormous international reputations, Eckhard Besuden remains something of a stand-by provocateur. It is a premiere that his work is exhibited in a gallery show of Studio 26 on the ultra-hip Lower East Side.
