Fitting in well with a most impressive lineup of fine art, sterling silver, jewelry, antiques, and Asian works, the midcentury design selection at Clarke Auction will feature the best of the best on September 7th at 12pm.
The selection will begin with several featured lots from post-war American designers. For example, there will be several lots of Paul McCobb including a travertine top and brass tea cart for the Irwin Collection distributed by Calvin. Also by Paul McCobb for Calvin, a beautiful darker finish server with brass accent pulls and “x” stretcher, and a blondewood desk.
Also to be offered in the selection is a quality brutalist zig-zag table by Paul Evans, signed and dated “PE ’70.”
Other iconic American works include an early black lacquered and chrome credenza by Harvey Probber, a sofa and chair set by Adrian Pearsall, and many lots of Frank Lloyd Wright for Henredon.
The Frank Lloyd Wright pieces include a pair of square end tables, an original upholstered sectional sofa with angular ends, a hexagonal ottoman, and a partial bedroom set. The bedroom set includes 2 chests, a mirror, and a night stand.
George Nelson for Herman Miller is another designer from America to be featured in the selection. A finely maintained CSS wall unit by Nelson will be offered, complete with three light cans. Also by Nelson is an unusual extension sofa complete with attached table to one end and a two drawer cabinet to the other. The Herman Miller label is attached to the drawer interior and is clearly for European production.
Danish and European designers featured in the sale include Preben Fabricius and Jorgen Kastholm. The two designer’s bird chair manufactured by Walter Knoll will be a hotly anticipated lot in the sale. Another Danish designer to be featured in the sale will be Kristian Vedel. The pair of exquisite Kristian Vedel “Modus” chairs were pulled from a local estate and will be sold as a pair.
From the same estate, a three seat rosewood sofa with chrome legs by Milo Baughman will be featured, along with a loveseat in the same design.
A Vladimir Kagan for Omnibus sectional sofa will also be presented on September 7th. The sofa has a repaired Lucite leg to one side, but is in overall good, original condition and should do well.
Outside of furniture selections, there are several lots of pottery, lighting, and design, including Cedric Hartman, Knoll, William Wyman, Claude Conover "Mayac" and more. Please see the online catalog at www.clarkeny.com for full midcentury listing.
In-house previews will be held Friday and Saturday, September 5th and 6th from 12pm to 6pm, and will continue Sunday, September 7th (day of sale) from 10am to 12pm (start of sale).
