A new website, StevenPowersPainter.com has launched. The site displays recent work by Brooklyn painter, Steven Powers. Though well known as a dealer in the art and antiques market, Powers' background is in painting and studied at the Hartford Art School with esteemed painters, Alfred Leslie, George McNeil and Stephen Brown.
This site launch also features the documentary short, A Painter's Path, by Kamau Ware. A Painter's Path traces the creative process and inspiration of Steven Powers. Kamau Ware is a Brooklyn-based photographic artist specializing in visual storytelling.
In these recent small-scale works, Powers explores the paint medium within representational landscapes that first engage at a distance and then intimately. At a macro level the rich impasto is an abstract and complex interweave of color and textures, while at a distance these details flatten out and forms become familiar and the landscapes more in focus. Powers is particularly attracted to individual details or moments within a landscape that for him, define the space, e.g. a particular knobby growth on a tree, an errant rock, or even a particular color.
Powers, having grown up in Maine, is inspired by its magnificent trees and craggy coast.
