Plans Announced for Boston's 9th Annual AD20/21 Show

Co-Producers Tony Fusco & Robert Four announce the 9th Annual AD20/21: Art & Design of the 20th & 21st Centuries & Boston Print Fair taking place April 7-10, 2016, at The Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts in the South End. The only show of its kind in New England, the fair features close to 50 outstanding exhibitors offering modern to contemporary fine art, Mid-Century furnishings and contemporary studio furniture, jewelry, decorative arts, glass, and sculpture. AD20/21 is the culminating event in the Third Annual Boston Design Week, March 30 – April 10, a 12-day design festival offering more than 60 events citywide. Launched by Fusco & Four in 2014, Boston Design Week has been a major success, with two additional days being added in 2016 and twice proclaimed "Boston Design Week" by Mayor Martin Walsh. The Gala Preview for AD20/21 on Thursday evening, April 7 from 5:30-9:00pm will support and celebrate Boston Design Week. The 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award winner will be presented at the Gala. Past Lifetime Achievement Awardees have included Vladimir Kagan, Dakota Jackson, Massimo and Lella Vignelli, Vicente Wolf and others. The producers are thrilled to welcome some outstanding newcomers to the show: Moderne Gallery (PA), widely recognized for Art Deco and for championing the work of George Nakashima, Wharton Esherick and others of the American Craft Movement; Habatat Galleries (FL), the country’s oldest gallery specializing in contemporary glass, presenting a major collection featuring numerous international glassmakers; longtime dealers Auerbach & Maffia (PA) showcasing fine modernist jewelry and decorative arts; and decorative and industrial arts dealers Bizarre Bazaar, Ltd. (NY).
Returning favorites include Glen Leroux Antiques (CT), specializing in mid-century modern furnishings and jewelry; furniture maker Paul Hahn of Artistic Endeavors (CT); Palette Contemporary Art & Craft (NM), with a wide range of fine art decorative arts; Galerie Camille (MI); and several fine art galleries including Bowersock Gallery (MW); Gleason Fine Art (ME), Fountain Street Fine Art (MA), Framont (CT), Renjeau Galleries (MA); and Susanna J. Fichera Fine Art (ME).
The Boston Print Fair, which occupies two salons within the AD20/21 show, is strong in both contemporary publishers and works from the 20th century. Returning publishers include Stewart & Stewart (MI), Bluejay Contemporary Art (MA & Scotland), Oehme Graphics (CO) and Center Street Studios (MA), along with show newcomer Bleu Acier (FL). Twentieth century specialists include M. Lee Stone Fine Prints (CA), Edward T. Pollack Fine Arts (ME), and Marc Chabot Fine Arts (CT), along with new exhibitor McMillan Fine Prints (NY). The producers are also pleased to announce that Jim Sherraden (TN) of the famed Hatch Show Print, will be showing his own works for the first time at the show, a series of striking paper quilts collaged from pieces of his woodblock prints. In addition, Denenberg Galleries of California will offer the works of modernist Edward Hagedorn (1902-1982), concurrent with the museum exhibition “Edward Hagedorn: Volcanoes, Riots, Wrecks, & Nudes” at Danforth Art in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Featured in the Lecture Hall at the show are the final programs of Boston Design Week, including special programs, book signings and panel discussions. On Saturday at 3:00pm, Mark Pasnik and Chris Grimley, co-authors of Heroic: Concrete Architecture and the New Boston, discuss the architecture of the 1960s and 1970s, sometimes called “Brutalist” architecture by Corbusier, Jose Luis Sert, Paul Rudolph and others. Also on Saturday, The Society of Arts and Crafts will host a panel discussion on "The Craft Economy: Sustaining Livelihoods and Neighborhoods". Closing out the show on Sunday the Junior League of Boston will offer a sneak preview of the 2016 Show House, which opens in Boston in May. Special programs are complimentary with show admission.
The weekend show takes place Friday, April 8 from 1-8pm, Saturday, April 9 from 11am-8pm, and Sunday April 10 from 11am-5pm. Weekend admission is $15, under 12 free, and includes a complimentary color show catalog and admission to all special programs at the fair. The Cyclorama provides the ideal venue for this exciting show. The historic structure is the heart of the Boston Center for the Arts complex, which boasts four theatres, a gallery, the Boston Ballet School, artist studios and other facilities.
