Clarke Auction Opens Winter Season with The Roberta Peters Collection - Sun., Nov. 7th

Operatic Memorabilia, Art, Georg Jensen, and Antiques from the home of the legendary opera star along with Midcentury Modern, Art Deco, 120 pounds of Silver including Irish Georgian, Listed Fine Art, Chandeliers, Antiques, and Garden Sculpture.
LARCHMONT, NY, November 04, 2010. On Sunday, November 7th at 2:00 pm, Clarke Auction's new Post Road building will host its opening winter sale with a collection from the home of the iconic coloratura soprano Roberta Peters. Ms Peters, who made her Metropolitan Opera debut at nineteen, went on to perform with the Met for more than thirty-five years.
The Peters collection includes opera mementos such as a 14k gold bas relief paperweight commemorating the old Metropolitan Opera House, created by Henryk Kaston and personalized for Ms Peters with her initials in diamond chips. Other opera memorabilia includes signed bronzes, sterling silver, fine art, and medallions presented to her over the course of her international career.
Other exceptional Peters highlights are a Georg Jensen Sterling Acanthus pattern service for sixteen, Cartier boxed salts, pairs of Gorham bowls and tazzi, pairs of marble-topped consoles and Italian mirrors; Fine Art including a Russian watercolor of two women, a oil on board of sailing ships by Earl Cunningham, and other listed art; and Famille Rose and other Asian decorative arts.
Fine Art from other local estates includes works by Marcel Dyf, Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso, Marini Marino, Andre Masson, Marc Chagall, Charles Levier, Alois Kalvoda, Jan DeRuth, Istvan Pekary, Raphael Soyer, Abram Tromka, Juan De'Prey, Francisco Zuniga, Susana Espinosa, Mary Fairchild Low, John Hare, Robert Patterson, John B Foster, Leo Brooks, Edith Kramer, and Walter Tittle; a 19th Century Bay of Naples gouache, a signed 19th Century oil of a Classical Beauty in a London frame. a possibly Russian landscape with figures, a 19th Century Oil signed Rauschner, and a collection of 1960s Yugoslavian paintings.
Of special interest in this sale is a collection of monumental copper and bronze statuary including a pair of signed Lions, an American Eagle, a signed stylized Cigar Store Indian, a Goose and Dancing Boy Fountain, and a Modernist Copper Fountain of Three Figures.
Art Deco and Micentury Modern Design includes a signed Jens Risom desk, a Harvey Probber rosewood conference table, bedroom set; pairs of John Widdicomb club chairs and endtables; a signed Midcentury Figural Sculpture and Initialed Wall Sculpture, a Midcentury Round Coffee Table with Variegated Tile Top and Brass Frame,Midcentury Paul McCobb Upholstered Club Chair, Karl Springer end tables, a pair of Paul Evans-style Mixed Metal Midcentury Floor Lamp, a Pair Sonneman Table Lamps, Kamers Chandeliers, and many unknown quality midcentury pieces. Art Deco highlights include a suite of Gilbert Rohde furniture from Central Park South.
A Hector Guimard Art Nouveau Gilt-Bronze and Glass Rod Chandelier, signed, and in very good to excellent condition is expected to be another highlight of this auction.
Hundred and Twenty Pounds of Silver includes the aforementioned Jensen and Roberta Peters pieces, Irish Georgian and Queen Anne Sterling Freedom Boxes and Goblets; Two Large Services of Gorham Flatware, Two Sets of Kirk Flatware, Tiffany Bowls, Platters, and Lidded Boxes.
Antiques highlights are a 19th Century English Partners Desk with Carved Lion Heads, possibly rosewood; a 19th Cent Parquetry Inlaid Handkerchief Table; a 19th Century Parquetry Inlaid 2 Drawer Desk with side pullouts; a late 19th Century Curio Cabinet; and other pieces. However, the standout piece may be an 18th Century painted and parcel-gilt Venetian Settee.
