Having just celebrated its 100th anniversary in November 2017, the New Mexico Museum of Art is now actively engaged in shaping its next century by inviting a group of 19 artists working in New Mexico to be guest contributors to its Instagram account (@nmartmuseum). Inaugurating the series is Albuquerque-based photographer Noah McLaurine, who will begin posting the week of January 21.
The electronic images will be viewable globally by anyone with access to Instagram who chooses to follow the museum account. They can also be seen on a touch-screen monitor in the exhibition Shifting Light: Photographic Perspectives (on view through October 7, 2018).
“The museum has an international collection of about 9,000 photographic prints,” said Curator of Photographs Katherine Ware, “but we also understand that today people view photographs most often on a screen.”
Each artist has been invited to contribute images for a week and will create work related to a theme from the exhibition (Land/Place, Culture/Identity, Community/Interconnectivity, or Vision/Creativity), creating a dynamic relationship between pictures online and pictures on the wall. Among the contributors are Jonathan Blaustein, Carola Clift, Kelly Eckel, Danae Falliers, Noah McLaurine, Aziza Murray, Ilona Pachler, Donald Woodman, and Zoë Zimmerman.
“The Instagram initiative gives us a chance to work with artists in New Mexico in a new and contemporary way,” Ware said. “It also allows us to connect with audiences that may not consider themselves museum-goers or who can’t easily get to Santa Fe.”
