Michele Pred presented an art performance at San Francisco International Airport on October 26, 2016; the 15th anniversary of the Patriot Act.
For this performance, Pred dressed as a 1960's flight attendant and "returned" pocket knives to arriving passengers waiting for their luggage in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2. These small knives have been the most common item confiscated by the TSA over the years and represent the thousands which have been confiscated from travelers. The knives are imprinted with the text, “Official Air Travel Replacement Knife” and are an example of Pred's efforts to engage the public to inspire a questioning of the status quo. Pred had to obtain a San Francisco International Airport, Freedom of Speech and Expressive Activities permit from the Airport Director in order to make her performance possible. Pred's mother was a stewardess for Pan Am in the 50's and 60's, she wore her mother's hat from that era for the performance.
