Galerie Alexis Pentcheff and Ghost Galerie will open a new exhibition dedicated to the work of Shepard Fairey at the French luxury hotel La Signoria in Calvi from May 31 to November 3, 2019. Nestled in the heart of Corsica, the “île de beauté” (island of beauty), this event will bring together twenty works by one of the most emblematic artists of the contemporary art scene.
Hotel La Signoria hosts a great diversity of worldwide visitors, providing an international scope to this project.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Shepard Fairey has built since the 1980s – 90s an incredibly viral body of work, which has spread well beyond the US borders. Rooted in urban culture and the graffiti movement, the artist that one might know now as Obey delivers work of a breathtaking universality at the crossroads of fine art, commercial art, urban art and political propaganda.
In the 2000s, the American artist revealed one of his major influences, Marshall McLuhan’s theory: "The medium is the message." According to this concept, the content would then be eclipsed by its medium, made anecdotal.
With Hope, the artist gained international attention. His portrait of Barack Obama, released during the campaign of the first black president of the United States in 2008, went internationally viral and marked American history. His graphic works are highly recognisable, depicting vivid contrasts of red, black and white that compose a new iconography, used as a mean of protest, rebellion or freedom of speech.
In an intimate setting, considered home-like, the owners of La Signoria – a beautiful Relais & Chateaux hotel housed in a breathtaking natural environment - offer temporary and thematic exhibitions to visitors in order to share their passion for art.
