Weschler’s March 3rd Capital Collections Estate Auction will feature Untitled P. II by Czechoslovakian artist Frantisek Foltyn. Considered to be one of the most pre-eminent Czech painters of non-figurative art, Foltyn’s work has garnered attention over the years from collectors and academics. Proof of his growing appeal was demonstrated in the impressive sale of two untitled oil on canvases that attained results well above their auction estimates, each selling for upwards of $100,000 at our December 9th Capital Collections Estate sale.

Untitled P. II hails from the estate of artist, Anna Walinska, whose work Musicians is also part of the sale. Walinska, part of the post-WWII Modernists and a trailblazer for female artists, befriended many important artists during the time she was developing her personal style, which she dubbed her ‘calligraphy of line’.  Musicians is an example of the beginnings of this style and appears as a homage to the works of artists such as André Lhote and Pablo Picasso, showing her admiration for them during her time in Paris circa 1926-1930. She later opened the Guild Art Gallery in New York in 1935, determined to bring the French sensibility to the New York art world, where she staged the first New York City solo exhibition of Arshile Gorky’s work. Foltyn’s Untitled P. II is expected to fetch $50,000-$70,000, while Walinska’s Musicians carries a $3,000-$5,000 estimate.
