Of special interest, the gallery will be exhibiting for the first time an oil painting by the master African-American artist, William H. Johnson (1901-1970). Painted in 1930, it is a portrait executed with the bold color and balanced brush strokes that unalterably established him as an artistic genius.
Other African-American artists to be included in the exhibition are Lois Mailou Jones, Betye Saar, Felrath Hines and Sam Gilliam.
Clarke Gallery inventories American artists from the Hudson River school through to the abstracted style of the 1960's and beyond.
