"The imperial workshops, known as the Zaobanchu, and sometimes referred to as the office of manufactory, was the agency responsible for the making of objects needed by the imperial household. The jade working studio, one of several studios within this agency, was responsible for the production of all jades and making jewelry. The majority of the master jade craftsmen came from Suzhou or Yangzhou, with a few from Xinjiang. Sometimes the imperials workshop would dispatch eunuchs to learn the craft from outside independent masters. At times, there outsiders were contracted to work the larger jade pieces. This talented group of craftsmen, by their mere presence in the Imperial Jade Studio, had ample opportunity to adapt and learn new techniques as well as exchange ideas with their fellow workers, not to mention the possibility of applying their skills to the fullest working with the abundance of imperial quality jades."
