Vose Galleries is pleased to announce the exhibition The Hidden Hand: New Works by John Whalley, featuring over a dozen still lifes by the contemporary realist artist.

Using the oil and egg tempera mediums, Whalley’s paintings of infinite detail and delicacy stem from a history of photo realism and trompe l’oeil painting, and often depict arrangements of discarded objects collected while exploring antique shops and the coastline near his home in Damariscotta, Maine. The artist muses, “the idea behind The Hidden Hand was to highlight both the hidden hand behind the making of the painting itself, as well as the hands that made the objects in the paintings and used them, adding the patinas and signs of use embedded on their surfaces."

'The Ladies,' 2019, oil on panel, 20 x 30 inches, signed lower right: 'JOHN WHALLEY'
