Museum of Fine Arts-Washington County announces that Daniel M. Fulco, Ph.D., has accepted the position of Agnita M. Stine Schreiber Curator of the Museum.  Dr. Fulco graduated from Connecticut College, New London, CT, with a degree in Art History and a Museum Studies Certificate (2004). He served as Assistant Director and Curator of the New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT, during a highly-charged 3- year period beginning in 2004, when the Museum underwent its first building expansion and renovation under former Director Douglas Hyland.

Rebecca Massie Lane, Director of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, stated that Daniel comes highly recommended as an outstanding scholar and helpful colleague. “He has good ideas for the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, and a track record of success, having served the New Britain Museum during a dynamic time, mounting exhibitions and planning associated programs, and helping to secure project support from foundations, corporations and individuals. We are pleased to welcome Daniel to the Museum of Fine Arts and introduce him to the four-state regional community.”

Desiring to further his curatorial career, Daniel Fulco entered graduate school, receiving his M. A. (2009) and Ph.D. (2014) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he secured the University’s highly competitive 3-year Distinguished Fellowship.  From 2011 to 2013, Dr. Fulco was awarded a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarship and a Walter Read Hovey Memorial Fund Scholarship from The Pittsburgh Foundation to complete his doctoral research.  Daniel also gained experience at the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. as a Curatorial Intern (2010) and as an Assistant in the Visual Resources Collection of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2011). Most recently, Dr. Fulco has taught Art History at Marymount University, Arlington, VA, University of Maryland, University College, Largo, MD, and Howard Community College, Columbia, MD.

Lee and Larry Stine

Last year, Dr. Fulco published his monograph, Exuberant Apotheoses: Italian Frescoes in the Holy Roman Empire, Visual Culture and Princely Power in the Age of Enlightenment (Leiden, Brill 2016). A scholar of European and American art from the 17th to the 19th centuries, Daniel’s research also engages with the exhibition of Islamic art at world’s fairs.

Dr. Elizabeth Johns, Ph.D., who served as Chair of the Curator Search Committee reported that,“Daniel Fulco has a broad knowledge of art history and interest in cross-cultural studies including foreign languages.  His specialized area of study is in European and American Art, which is a very good fit for our Museum’s collections. His scholarship is impeccable and he has already published a book based on his dissertation research.”

The Agnita M. Stine Schreiber Curator position was established through a permanently restricted endowment given to the Museum of Fine Arts-Washington County in July 2016 by the Agnita M. Stine Schreiber Foundation, Lee E. Stine, Jr., of Shepherdstown, WV, President, and Larry W. Stine of Charlotte, NC, Treasurer. Alfred E. Martin, President of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, expressed the deep gratitude of the board to the Stine-Schreiber Foundation. “The earnings on this endowed fund will allow us to fund this important mission-centered position in perpetuity.”

Agnita Marie Stine-Schreiber (1913-2007) was a devoted member of the Museum of Fine Arts.  Raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she graduated from Western Michigan University and taught Occupational Therapy and Clothing Design at Ann J. Kellogg School in Battle Creek, MI.  After her marriage in Cedar Falls to Lee Edward Stine in 1938, she moved to Hagerstown, residing there for the rest of her life.  She was manager and co-owner of the cafeteria at Fairchild Aircraft Corporation for nine years.  An active volunteer and philanthropist, she held board positions and contributed to many Washington County organizations, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Hagerstown Women’s Club, San Mar Children’s Home, and the YMCA. She also served on the board of Antietam Bank.  Her son, Lee Stine, who serves as Vice President of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, stated that “I have wanted to help the museum secure a full-time Curator since accepting a position on the board of trustees in 2010.”

As Agnita M. Stine Schreiber Curator, Daniel Fulco will oversee a diverse collection of more than 6,500 works of art in the museum’s permanent collection.  He will have responsibility for the research, interpretation, exhibition, promotion, stewardship, and expansion of the collection.  He will actively develop rotating and permanent exhibitions, associated artistic and educational programs and will provide public lectures, gallery talks, and assist with docent training.

Admission to the Museum is Free and Museum hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
