Clarke Auction’s July 14th sale will include several midcentury design masterworks by Paul Evans, Poul Kjaerholm, Ib Kofod- Larsen, Florence Knoll, Ray & Charles Eames, and more.
The featured lot in the sale is a magnificent and large wall mounted hanging cabinet by Paul Evans. The deep relief front cabinet has a riveted metal edging, monumentally heavy fold-out doors, and dual slate insert tops. The bottom of the left door is signed Paul Evans and is dated ’67. The beautiful 72” long piece is fresh from a local estate in Long Island, New York and bears a conservative $10,000 / $15,000 estimate at auction. On the opposite spectrum of Evans, a patchwork walnut and metal desk and credenza will also be auctioned together at an estimate of $1,000/$1,500.
The early favorite lot of midcentury design in the sale is the rare pair of complete Ib Kofod-Larsen “Elisabeth” chairs. The Danish designer’s chairs are in original structural condition, although the upholstery will need to be re-done. The rosewood frames each bear the Christiansen & Larsen company mark to the front rail interior. The rosewood frames support flat paddle-form arms that descend vertically at the rear elbow. The design is seamless and minimalist but still manages to drop jaws at the witness of their near perfect design aesthetic. The chairs will be offered at an estimate of $1000 / $1,500 estimate.
Another important midcentury designer, Poul Kjaerholm will be represented in the July 14th sale through the offering of the PK-61 coffee table. This table comes on the heels of a nearly identical one that was sold the previous month. The last table sold had a slight natural imperfection to the Cippolino marble top that may have affected a purist collector’s bidding habits, but Clarke is happy to say that this current offering has the same rare Cippolino marble top without a single deformity or condition issue. The table will be offered at a $7,000/$9,000 estimate.
From another local estate, several pieces of original Florence Knoll furniture will be offered. The first will be an upholstered arm chair and ottoman. The armchair is an early example and will feature the recognizable chrome frame beneath bright and early upholstery. The importance of this piece, and the larger Florence Knoll sofa to be offered on July 14th, arise from their provenance. The consignor inherited the pieces from his father who worked for one of the original fabric companies used by Knoll to upholster their furniture lines. Both the chair and ottoman, estimated at $800/$1,000 and the three seat sofa, estimated at $1,500/$2,500 feature the early upholstery and are in marvelous condition.
The midcentury selection will feature many additional lots, including a rosewood framed 670 lounge chair and 671 ottoman by Ray & Charles Eames, several lots of Murano lighting, Camer lighting, Hansen lamps, a beautiful pair of De Sede DS-80 benches, several pieces of Dunbar, custom 1950s bookcases, chairs, sculpture, artwork, mirrors, and more.
In-house previews will be held on Saturday & Sunday July 12th & 13th from 12pm to 6pm. The previews will continue July 14th (day of sale) from 12pm to 4pm (start of sale).
