ABERDEEN, Miss. – Quality antique items from prominent and historic estates throughout the South, plus an extraordinary collection of American Brilliant Cut Glass, porcelains and antiques from the estate of Mrs. Gertrude Sanders of Amory, Miss., will be sold at auction on Saturday, Jan.17, by Stevens Auction Company, in the firm’s gallery located at 609 North Meridian Street.

The auction will get underway promptly at 10 a.m. Central time, with internet bidding facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com. Longtime regulars at Stevens Auction Company sales will recognize the Sanders name from 1999, when a huge auction was held for Gertrude’s late husband, R. B. Sanders. This past October, a portion of Mrs. Sanders’ collections was sold, also by Stevens.

At that event, the star lot was a rare and beautiful Chinese plaque that sold to a Chinese online bidder for $97,000. Now, the rest of her vast collections, which include most of the 170 total pieces of American Brilliant Cut Glass in the auction (one other collection makes up the rest), will be sold, alongside other offerings, including an exceptional estate out of Lexington, Ky.

The auction will feature Federal, Empire and late Victorian furniture, sterling silver, Old Paris and other fine porcelains, exquisite china, antique clocks and oil lamps, original works of art, hand-made antique rugs, large antique pier mirrors, unique primitive pieces and other fine home furnishings. In addition to live and internet bidding, phone and absentee bids will also be taken.

Porcelain lots will include a large and impressive two-part German carriage, 2 feet long by 11 ½ inches wide; a porcelain and bronze perfume bottle, egg-shaped and with a marble base, 9 inches tall; and a Meissen porcelain figural flower centerpiece, made circa 1880 and standing 17 inches tall, with a hairline crack that was repaired and last sold at auction by Christie’s in March 2006.

Other outstanding pieces will include a Royal Bonn (Germany) jardinière, having love knot bows with hanging moss and roses, 47 inches tall; a large and fine 19th century stained and leaded glass window in the original frame; a stunning American Brilliant Cut Glass tray, 9 inches in diameter; and a magnificent 144-piece cobalt and gilt decorated china set, produced in the late 19th century.

Gorgeous 19th century furniture pieces, some by renowned makers, will be sold throughout the day. Pieces by R. J. Horner (N.Y.) will include a carved mahogany pedestal with original finish, circa 1880; and a mahogany partner’s desk with race track top and finely carved griffins. Also sold will be a 9-foot-tall Renaissance Victorian sideboard attributed to Thomas Brooks (N.Y.).

Additional furniture will include an early 19th century rosewood secretary; a walnut Victorian hall tree with rare swivel side hooks, original pans and marble, 8 feet 4 inches tall, circa 1870; an Empire Revival sideboard with original gold stencils and high chimney backsplash, circa 1840; and a mahogany Empire dining table with claw feet, gadrooned top and six leaves, circa 1870.

Also slated for auction will be a circa 1850 palatial gold Victorian pier mirror with marble base, framed and with ornate grape leaves and cherubs; a Victorian cast iron spring chair in original condition, with no damage to the springs, circa 1870; a Victorian walnut clock with carved horse crown, 41 inches tall; and an oil on canvas rendering of a farm scene, 58 inches by 38 inches.

Dwight Stevens predicted it will take three big auctions to liquidate the two estates. These auctions are tentatively scheduled for sometime in spring 2015.
