People will get to see the full breadth of this man’s great talent, which is extensive and diverse.

Adja Yunkers, born in 1900 in Latvia, studied in Leningrad, Paris, Berlin and London before emigrating to Sweden in 1934. His reputation as a political artist and print maker preceded him and he was welcomed with open arms in Sweden, where he remained for 16 years, focusing mainly on prints. His extensive work there left him on the forefront of the European art world.

In 1947, there was a terrible fire in Yunkers’ Stockholm studio which destroyed almost everything. Despite this setback he kept going. In 1947, he moved to the United States where he lived out the rest of his life. In 1949, he received a Guggenheim fellowship. During the 1950’s he primarily worked in color woodcuts, introducing brushwork into the genre. In 1960, he began producing lithographs. He produced 2 important series of lithographs at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles―Salt (five lithographs) and Skies of Venice (ten lithographs). Yunkers died in New York City in 1983. He is well represented in museums in the U.S. and abroad.

Among the many works to be offered at Clarke will be a number of rare woodcuts from the 1940’s and 1950’s. Original ink drawings include “Skies of Venice” portfolio, cave paintings and Native American inspired drawings.
