(New York, NY) On September 13th Doyle New York will auction the estate of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. A distinguished actor and decorated war hero, Fairbanks starred in films such as “Morning Glory” (1933), “Prisoner of Zenda” (1930) and “Gunga Din” (1939). The 430 lot sale includes memorabilia, bespoke clothing, photographs, books, silver, furniture, artwork and decorations from the actor’s Park Avenue home. Artfact Live! will provide online bidding for this landmark event.
Highlighting the sale is an ink and wash drawing by Venetian artist Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (1727-1804). The piece, titled “Flying Angels”, is signed by the artist and measures 7.25 x 10 inches. The artist is one of three renowned painters and illustrators in his family, being the son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and elder brother of Lorenzo Baldissera Tiepolo. An accomplished draughtsman, many of Tiepolo’s most popular works are his ink and wash drawings. The piece is estimated to bring $6,000 - $9,000.
Also offered is a Patek Philippe gold wristwatch, owned and regularly worn by the actor. The watch is made from 18 kt. gold, is signed “Patek Philippe” and is engraved with the actor’s initials: “D.F.Jr.”. A two-tone ivory and gold tone dial with Roman numerals adorns the watch face. Accompanying the piece, which is expected to bring $5,000 - $7,000, is a black and white photograph of the actor wearing the watch beside actress Marlene Dietrich.
Two guest books from Douglas Fairbanks’ home are also included in this exciting auction. The first chronicles events from 1939-1952 at his Pacific Palisades, CA home and the second spans 1959-1974 at his London residence. The books include the autographs of such luminaries as Cole Porter (a regular visitor), Mary Pickford, Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, Princess Margaret, Henry Fonda, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland and numerous others. Both are extraordinary records detailing social life of their respective periods. Notably, Fairbanks’ California residence is now owned and occupied by famed film director and producer Stephen Spielberg. The guest books are expected to sell for $3,000 - $5,000 each.
A number of additional items are also offered, including first edition volumes from Fairbanks’ expansive book collection, a George III style mahogany partner’s desk and a luxurious Louis Vuitton steamer trunk. A full-color catalog for the sale is available at www.Artfact.com.
