The Salon: Art + Design, the elegant fair that debuted at the Park Avenue Armory last November, exhibiting an outstanding range of art, historic and contemporary design, returns to Park Avenue from November 14th-18th. The fair that the New York Times called “a museum in the making at the Park Avenue Armory,” is a collaboration between Sanford Smith + Associates and The Syndicat National des Antiquaires. The show’s appeal lies in the diverse mix of dealers and the wealth of material assembled.

The 2012 Salon was the Syndicat’s first venture in the United States, showcasing many dealers who had never exhibited here before; that will be true again this year, and helps the show set a new standard for quality and breadth of material amongst American fairs. Dealers reported strong sales, and architects and designers visited the fair multiple times. Top exhibitors returning include Parisian design heavyweights Galerie Downtown, Galerie Marcilhac, Yves Macaux, Oscar Graf and Galerie du Passage. They will be joined by Stockholm’s Modernity, presenting modern and contemporary Swedish design. Kraemer, Paris’ highly esteemed family business, returns with a fantastic selection of 18th and 19th century furniture and decorative arts. New York‘s Joan Mirviss will again present contemporary Japanese ceramics. For the booth of British newcomer, Adrian Sassoon, Kate Malone has created a group of ceramic “Atomic” sculpture. This widely varied group of dealers ensures that The Salon will exhibit the finest selection of design material in the world.

The ethnographic arts will also be particularly strong with the addition of Lucas Ratton, a third generation dealer in African art and two world-class pre-Columbian galleries: Galerie Mermoz and 1492. They will feature works from the Mayan, Incan, Olmec, Chavin of Maranon cultures.

Patrice Trigano, whose Left Bank gallery specializes in 20th century and contemporary art, Richard Nagy, a U.K. specialist in Schiele and Klimt, London/New York fine art dealers Waterhouse & Dodd and Brussels’ Maurice Keitelman round out the list of new European art participants. New York design dealer, Cristina Grajales, makes her inaugural appearance at the Salon along with California’s highly respected Tasende Gallery and New York/European transplant Antoine Helwasser.

One of the many reasons for the Salon’s appeal is that the 53 booths are spacious and highly curated. Well-known designers create fabulous spaces. Deco dealer L’Arc en Seine’s booth will be designed by Jean de Pièpape. Dominique Lachevsky, a well-known interior designer will create the stand of Alain Marcelpoil. Returning American dealer Mark Benda is having a space created specially for the Salon. “We are very excited to work with designer Charles Zana. We’ve given Mr. Zana carte blanche to work with the gallery's stable of artists and designers to create this year’s booth. The Salon, New York is a great venue to exhibit the best of design and art, and Mr. Zana and Friedman Benda are committed to showing the best of both.”

The Salon opens on Thursday, November 14th with various events including a private Vernissage followed by an opening night preview. Architectural Digest will host the evening, which will include champagne provided by Pommery. The fair continues through Monday, November 18.
