New York City Book and Ephemera Fair Opens Today

The New York City Book and Ephemera Fair runs today from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola’s Wallace Hall on Park Avenue at 84th Street. The newest  addition to Rare Book Week hosts more than 50 prominent dealers. Rare volumes range from the 15th century to 21st century offerings. Prices are $50 - $15,000.

Among the highlights is a signed 24-volume set of Arthur Conon Doyle’s complete works, valued at $15,000. Meanwhile, a mid-century issue of “Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There”, with illustrations by Barry Moser, including two artist's prints, is #26 of 50 copies produced full leather binding for Penny Royal Press subscribers. Its price is $5,500.

Other highlights include: 

  • Arthur Rimbaud’s “Season in Hell,” bi-lingual translation, with images by Robert Mapplethorpe,
  • Gertrude Stein’s “Portraits and Prayers”, with inscription,
  • Edward Weston book of photographs, 1931, inscribed and signed by Weston,
  • 15th c. Book of Hours,
  • Illuminated fragment from the choir book of Ferdinand and Isabella.

Modern and contemporary offerings include:

  • Peaks and People of the Adirondacks ,
  • “Flowers of Hawaii”, with hand colored images, 
  • “Book of the Tarpon”, housed in a handcrafted box surmounted with a lure.

Important Americana includes a Tyler-Giles facsimile of the Declaration of Independence that carries a $6,000 price tag. An Indian War Soldier’s service rifle en suite with Native American cabinet card photos will be offered for $6,750.

One of the featured maps is a 1965 Sanitary and Topographical map of Manhattan detailing engineering infrastructure and naturally occuring features below ground that were important in the building of early skyscrapers. It's price is $5,000.

Notable ephemera includes:

  • An outstanding musical manuscript is the manuscript of Lincoln’s Funeral March played in Washington, DC,
  • a Dmitri Shostakovich signed photograph, 
  • a 1966 Grateful Dead-Lightening Hopkins-Loading Zone poster from a Fillmore concert,
  • 19th c. Russian hand-colored prints.

The New York City Book and Ephemera Fair was noted  this week on NPR, WINS Radio, and CBS 800. It is expected to bring out hundreds of collectors. Tickets at the door are $15 and $10 if purchased online in advance. A discount admission coupon is available at www.bookandpaperfairs.com.  A free shuttle bus will take buyers to the ABAA Fair at the Park Armory.
