Leading off with rare Italian design, An Extremely Important & Monumental Le Funi Urn by Gio Ponti made in 1927 comes to auction from James D. Julia next Friday, August 26. Gio Ponti created this decoration specifically for this large tapered vase form in the summer of 1926. In a letter dated August 13, 1926, Ponti noted, "Having approved on the 4th of this month the decoration of the large vase with ropes, please arrange its execution for I could see it accomplished at the end of this month. We need to have two of these vases ready for a symmetric display at the exhibition." He was referring to the III Monza Triennale of 1927, in which a pair of these vases were exhibited. It is stated there are two other examples of this design known, one original in the Lauro Collection, which is now in a private collection in Verona, and the second is in a private collection in Genoa.
