The Tobey C. Moss Gallery presents California Contemporary Modernists:  a Virtual Exhibition, displaying the wide diversity of ideas and techniques of California artists from the 1930's to the 1990's.  This exhibit shows how 'California' was wide open for new concepts and directions.  Artists felt a freedom to burst through boundaries and pave new paths, from John Altoon and Peter Krasnow to Oskar Fischinger and Lorser Feitelson.

In a rich fabric of creative imagery...figuration, abstraction, surrealist, cubist, the California Contemporary Modernists exhibit shows the interim states in an artist's evolution.  You can feel the  meditative essence in Helen Lundeberg, John Paul Jones and Clinton Adams.  The complexities of composition stimulate further exploration in works by Peter Krasnow, Leonard Edmondson and Lee Mullican.  In three dimensions, Jack Zajac, Gordon Wagner and George Herms open other directions.

The Tobey C. Moss Gallery opened in 1978.  As a member of the IFPDA/International Fine Print Dealers Association, our print inventory is extensive and we also offer drawings, watercolors, collages, paintings and sculptures.  We favor American artists, particularly those active in California since the 1930s through today.  Abstraction is a special direction in the Gallery, in parallel with social cristicism, kineticism, works by women artists and works by Mexican/Latin and African  Americn artists.  In addition, we offer occastional fine works by European, Asian and Early Master artists.

Many estates and media have been represented in the Gallery with current focus upon those of Jules Engel, Leonard Edmondson, Werner Drewes, Stanton Macdonald Wright, Clinton Adams, Micholas P. (Nick) Briganted, Peter Krasnow and Gordon Wagner.

We also present works by Ruth Asawa, Mario Avati, Dorr Bothwell, Elizabeth Catlett, Lee Chesney, William Dole, Lorser Feitelson, Oskar Fishchinger, Ynez Johnston, John Paul Jones, Matusumi (Mike) Kanemitsu, Basil Langton, Helen Lundeberg, George Herms, Leopoldo Mendez, Carlos Merida, Lee Mullican, Pablo O'Higgins, Arnoldo Pomodoro, Jose Guadelupe Posada, Jay Rivkin, Betye Saar, Palmer Schoppe, Joyce Treiman, Howard Warshaw, June Wayne, Emerson Woelffer, Tyrus Wong and many others.
