Carlyle's latest online auction features nearly 200 lots of fresh-to-the-market paintings, sculpture, prints & multiples. As usual, the Carlyle’s auction will be featuring an eclectic mix of fine art, including: Asian, Latin and Middle Eastern art, to European and American 19th century, Old Masters and antique Russian Icons. Starting prices on some lots are only $100, with most items in the $2,000-5,000 range, making them highly accessible to collectors of all budgets.
One of the highlights of the October auction will be a selection of important 1960’s paintings by famed Indian artist Avinash Chandra (1931-1991) who is best known for his abstracted yet sexualized representations of the female body, inspired by the tradition of Indian erotic art.
Along with F.N. Souza, Avinash Chandra was part of a generation of Indian expatriate artists, who found success in London in the 1960’s. Chandra was the subject of a 1962 BBC television documentary ‘Art of Avinash Chandra’, and was the first Indian British artist to be featured at the Tate Gallery in London, and the first Indian artist to exhibit at Documenta in Kassel. Avinash Chandra’s paintings are included in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Tate Gallery and Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris, Museum of Modern Art, and other important public and private collections.
Carlyle Auctions will be offering 12 paintings by Chandra, including oil on canvas and vibrantly colored works on paper. The paintings created in the 1960’s are from an important East Coast collection. Estimates range from $1,000 to $8,000.
Contemporary Art highlights include an 1966 painting of a female nude by Los Angeles-based Pop Artist James Gill. James Gill was a part of the early Pop Art movement, represented by the renowned Felix Landau gallery and exhibited alongside Warhol, Jasper Johns, and other leading American artists in major shows worldwide. Gill’s 1962 “Marilyn Triptych” was the first Pop Art painting of Marilyn Monroe - preceding Andy Warhol. In November 1962, the Museum of Modern Art in New York - as a gift of John de Menil and Dominique de Menil – added this painting to to its collection.
This painting carries a $4,000-6,000 estimate and was in the Los Angeles collection of Louis & Annette Kaufman. Louis Kaufman was a Romanian American Violinist, and possibly the most recorded musical artist of the 20th century. He played on the soundtrack of as many as 500 movies and made over 100 musical recordings.
The auction is online-only. The full auction catalog is available at www.carlyle-auctions.com
