Antiques Striped Dimaond and Mini Bowties Runner from Laura Fisher's FISHER HERITAGE.
Laura Fisher's FISHER HERITAGE

When that groom and groom, or bride and bride, or even (gasp!) that bride and groom walk down the aisle in New York State from July 24 on, make their event even more memorable  by covering the aisle with an antique hooked rug or rag carpet runner. It will be something the couple can use in their home after the ceremony to cherish as a reminder of their long-anticipated day.

NYC Americana antiques dealer Laura Fisher recommends using a runner from the 19th or early 20th century instead of a plain old white rug. Make your choice from Fisher’s select inventory of loom-woven rag carpet in plaids, or with vertical stripes, or with all- over striations;  traditional hooked rugs in runner lengths with either geometric, floral or pictorial designs, or braided or crocheted runners

Choose something that will delight the happy couple, and will also intrigue the wedding guests, from the great collection Fisher has assembled just for that special moment. The runners vary in width from about 1 ½’ wide up to 4' wide, and vary in length from 8' up to some rag carpet rolls that run 45' long; later on, those can be cut into shorter strips and sewn together to make a room size carpet.

The real beauty of antique and vintage rag carpet and hooked rugs has never been successfully copied because of the color variegation and visual effects in the originals that come from the variety of materials used in their construction. These originals have a liveliness and depth that cannot be matched.

In Fisher’s collection are rag carpet runners such as:

* a variegated wool runner from Maine, in salmon, green, red and navy all-over striations, measuring 2'2 x 18'

* a classic Amish-made rag carpet with a variegated blue background and 2 vertical stripes; many such vintage rolls are available, about 3' wide x 15' to 25’ long in a multitude of colors and stripe patterns

* a New England rag runner with narrow even horizontal stripes in several colors

* a Pennsylvania rag carpet patterned with horizontal wide panels of varied stripes alternating with solid charcoal bands, made from many tweed rag strips

* a variegated brown and white background runner with two red stripes

* an all- over small scale plaid New England runner in shade of green and rose

* a runner patterned with large scale squares in shades of apricot, green and neutrals, measuring 2'7" x 15'

* a variegated runner in sunset colors that can be cut and joined later into a room size rug -  a fantastic find at a length of 45’7”

Among the hooked rug and braided rug possibilities are:

* A FLAMESTITCH RUNNER in brilliant colors of yellow, aqua, adobe , 1'5" x 15'

* A 'CRAZY SHARDS" PATTERNED RUNNER  WITH A ZIGZAG BORDER unusually long at 2'10" x 17'9"  in shades of navy, framed in camel

* A 19th century runner with A MAPLE LEAVES DOUBLE BORDER

* A LOG CABIN VARIATION RUNNER WITH BOWTIE  INTERSECTIONS

* A CHEERY BASKETWEAVE RUNNER in primary colors in rotated squares 3'4" x 8'8"

* A NAUTICAL RUNNER with vignettes in sea blue tweeds and camel, narrow and perfect for that early 19th c seashore cottage

* A MISSONI-LIKE STRAITED SQUARES HOOKED RUNNER in chic black with multi color rotated squares

* A BRAIDED RUNNER with vertical strips of blue, navy, chartreuse, grey wool
