MAIZE, Kan. – The majolica collection of Martin Kasischke of Iowa, items from the estate of Joe and Esther Stevens from Wichita, Kansas, and four smaller collections will all come up for bid on Saturday, August 27th, in a sale of art glass and other collectibles in the Maize Recreation Center, located at 1001 North Grady Avenue in Maize, a town located north and west of Wichita, right off of State Road 96.
“The widely diversified offerings in this sale make it truly one of the can’t-miss auction events of 2016, especially for lovers of art glass pieces,” said Jason Woody of Woody Auction, the Douglass, Kansas-based firm conducting the auction. Offered will be Nippon, Daum Nancy and Galle pieces, as well as furniture, advertising items, slot machines, firearms and more. The start time is 9:30 am Central time.

Majolica is the much sought after and highly collectible type of stoneware first developed by Minton in the mid-19th century. It is characterized by rich enameling and high relief decoration. The auction will be brimming with majolica, such as the beautiful 32-inch figural ewer by B.Bloch & Co. (Germany), with a mermaid and dolphin surrounding the vase’s body, with embossed cherub and floral highlights.
Other majolica will feature an elaborate, 40-inch-tall jardinière and pedestal, green and brown with a three-dimensional floral blossom décor and a blue interior, in surprisingly fine condition; and a very rare Roseville Art Nouveau umbrella stand, brown, with an embossed woman and a floral blossom décor and green interior. The piece, 26 ¾ inches in height, comes with the original Roseville label.
Still more majolica will include a salesman’s sample jardinière perched on an outstanding pedestal, 16 ½ inches tall and featuring the first Dressler mark and a black and maroon swirl design; a 30-inch tall umbrella stand with gorgeous colors and a full-figure strutting Tom Turkey in front of large blossoming plants; and a jardinière and pedestal with brown and green mottled design and lion head and claw feet.
Fans of Galle will be wowed by the rare 2 ½ inch by 3 inch signed French cameo art glass vase, caramel in color and marble glass, with carved and applied floral blossom in relief and original Galle paper label; and a 9 ¼ inch tall Galle French art pottery vase, kidney-shaped, with brown, white and blue tones, large blossom décor with large applied insect and a base marked in script “E. Galle Nancy.”
Turning to fine art, up for bid will be a 19th century French figural sculpture of an Indian maiden on a canoe preparing for the hunt, perched atop an ebony base, 11 ½ inches tall, created circa the 1880s and artist-signed “Vuchoiselle”; and an original oil painting by Hermann Herzog (Germ./Am., 1832-1932), showing a woman in a field milking a cow while other cattle graze nearby, artist signed and in a frame.
Collectors of Daum Nancy will be able to bid on an 11 ¾ inch tall signed French cameo pedestal vase boasting a frosted background with mottled red and green highlights, carved green overlay with poppy décor and a hammered effect on the body’s surface; as well as a signed French cameo square bowl, yellow in color with a mottled background, and a branch and blossom cameo carved and enamel décor.
Also sold will be a signed Daum Nancy French cameo art glass vase with lovely pink and green pastel coloring and a highly detailed carved dandelion décor with a French inscription: “Comme la Plume al Vent” (“Like the feather to the wind”); and a signed A. Walter Nancy French pate de verre art glass piece with a finely carved lizard coiled around the base of a yellow vase body, 8 ¾ inches in height.
Rounding out just some of the many expected top earners is an 86 inch tall Hershede “Grand Prize” grandfather clock with three weights and nine chimes, housed in a beautiful case; and a 7 inch tall unmarked Wave Crest egg crate mold hinged dresser box having an iridescent bronze background with gold spatter highlights, a branch and blossom décor, a tapestry featured on the lid and original lining.
