Catch a fallen star at this year’s Esher Hall Antiques & Fine Art Fair which takes place from Friday 11 until Sunday 13 October 2013 at Esher Hall, Sandown Park Racecourse, Portsmouth Road, Esher, Surrey KT10 9AJ.
Discover the glamour of Russian and Oriental textiles and carpets, antique and designer jewellery, Art Deco pieces, country and period antique furniture, 18th & 19th century Swedish furniture and decorative items, contemporary and traditional sculpture and paintings, books and original book illustrations, glass, silver, clocks and objets d’art for the discerning collector and those seeking the finer things in life. This elegant, boutique-style vetted fair is a haven for interior decorators and collectors. With prices starting from £50 up to five figure sums there is plenty of choice.
Probably the most unusual items to be found at this annual event, now in its sixth year, are unique pieces from outer space from Fallenstars Meteorites. Found as far afield as Argentina, where they fell 4,000 years ago and more recently in Russia, they make fascinating sculptures. Other newcomers include Art Deco furniture dealer Jeroen Markies from Forest Row, East Sussex; Hickmet Fine Arts of London's Portobello Road with European sculptures and art glass, Brookes-Smith from Edenbridge, Kent selling English period furniture, works of art, Art Nouveau and Deco jewellery; Hebeco from Kent, dealers in silver, glass and objects of vertu including a Georgian silver teapot priced at £1,450; picture dealer Ashleigh House Fine Art from Saffron Walden selling Victorian and Edwardian oil paintings; and traditional furniture restorers Ottery Antiques from Somerset bringing an exceptional linen press, c1765, priced at £7,850.
Another first for this year is the strong contingent of overseas galleries including Swedish antiques Young Gun, Daniel Larsson of D. Larsson Interiör & Antikhandel specialising in high quality Rococo and Gustavian painted furniture and two galleries from Germany, Galerie Arabesque from Stuttgart with Oriental and Russian antique textiles and artefacts including a rare 19th century Russian brocade of metal and silk thread and a 17th century Chinese large textile sent by the emperor to a monastery in Tibet. Depicting dragons chasing the pearl of enlightenment, this particular piece was cut to dress a Tibetan lama’s throne. Kunsthandel Edda Birchall from Flonheim, deals in European and Russian paintings and drawings from Old Masters to the 20th century and is bringing works by leading Russian Constructivist Yakov Georgievich
Chernikhov (1899-1951), Mikhail Chemiakin and Antonius Höckelmann as well as antique furniture.
A decorative feature in this year’s fair celebrates everyone’s love of the English garden. Former Surrey dealer Nicholas Arkell, whose business Walton House Antiques is now based in Wiltshire, is bringing garden statuary, planters, urns and ironwork for those looking to buy a striking highlight for a small urban patio or larger country grounds. Other furniture includes a fine George III period mahogany four poster bed, probably made by Gillows of Lancaster, from WR Harvey & Co (Antiques) Ltd and a 19th century Somerset stick Windsor oak chair from Melody Antiques.
Of local interest are several paintings from the area and environs, most notable amongst which is ‘The Footpath by the Waterlane’ by popular Victorian artist, Myles Birket Foster RWS (1825-1899) for sale from John Robertson, priced at £65,000. The artist lived for many years in Witley before moving to Weybridge, where he ended his days. This painting was originally exhibited at The Royal Watercolour Society Summer Exhibition in 1892. Other Surrey landscapes can be found on Cambridge Fine Art’s stand. Berkshire also features with an oil on canvas by Peter Biegel painted in 1949, ‘The Wokingham Stakes, Royal Ascot’ priced at £6,000 from The Swan Gallery. Amongst the canvases for sale from Haynes Fine Art of Broadway is ‘The baby and the blue forget me not’ (£89,500) by British Impressionist Dorothea Sharp (1874 – 1955), who lived in Berkshire, London and St Ives. With the huge success of the Lowry exhibition presently at Tate Britain it is timely to find two sketches by LS Lowry (1887-1976) ‘Steam Dredger’ in pencil (£48,500) and ‘Street scene’ in pencil and ink (£47,500).
Meet award winning illustrator Angel Dominguez at the launch of ‘Purr & Feather’ on Art of the Imagination’s stand. Dominguez’s exquisite new paintings enrich this limited edition boxed book full of well-loved poems and prose by luminaries like Edward Lear, Ford Madox Ford, William Blake, William Wordsworth, WB Yeats, Hans Christian Andersen and Percy Shelley. Appealing to adults and children alike, each of the 200 hand-bound books is signed and numbered and can be dedicated as a special gift, selling for £175. The original book illustrations are also for sale, priced between £1,200 and £1,500 (see separate release for full information).
The fair is supporting two charities, each having a presence at the fair - The Art Fund, helping museums and galleries buy art for everyone to enjoy and The Poppy Factory, based in Richmond, who work to help wounded, injured and sick ex-Service men and women find meaningful and sustainable employment in the communities where they live in the UK.
The fair is staged in association with two Westerham based partner practices of St. James's Place Wealth Management: David Stainton (Associate Partner) and Elegant Solutions (UK) LLP (Senior Partner Practice).
Refreshments are available throughout the day and ample free parking makes it easy to spend a relaxed and fulfilling day enjoying all that is on offer.
