Two auctions are being held at Gray’s in Cleveland on October 29. The Asian fine and decorative arts auction starts at 11am (EST) and the fine art and 20th Century design auction starts at 1pm. Live online bidding is offered by Live Auctioneers for both auctions.

Highlights of the Asian fine and decorative arts auction include Lot 18, a 17/18th Century Chinese carved, pale celadon, brown and russet Jade mountain, notable for its extraordinary coloring and intricately carved two-sided mountain-scape, depicting a mountain trail scene with stairs, pine trees, rock formations, pagodas and two figures in the foreground. Lot 1 is a magnificent, 19/20th Century Palace size, cloisonné censer which stands at 50 inches (127 cm) tall.  Lot 4 is a group of four oversize Chinese brass warriors, depicting the four great heavenly warrior kings who in Buddhist folk lore protect the world from evil. The auction also features a fine collection of historic Chinese coins, a collection of floor screens and some wonderful Japanese and Korean decorative works of art.

Highlights from the fine art and 20th century design auction include lot 217A, an unusual copper and quartz horse form sculpture by Curtis Jeré. Lot 227 is a Charles and Ray Eames lounge chair and ottoman by Herman Miller, with the original sticker and label, which also includes the original Herman Miller button replacement kit with directions. Lot 59 is a Salvador Dali etching on wove paper of St. George slaying the dragon, signed and dated 1947 lower right in pencil. It was published by the Cleveland Print Club and has the print club ink stamp on verso. It is still in its original Cleveland Print Club mat. Lot 49 is a Joan Miró etching and aquatint in color, signed and numbered 1/30 in pencil, titled Enrajolats I. During the last six years of his life, Miró’s main focus was on drawing, engraving, and lithography rather than painting. The Enrajolats series were prepared by Miró in collaboration with Joan Barbarà at Miró’s Palma studios on the island of Mallorca.

Other notable lots in the Fine Art and 20th Century Design auction include Lot 181 a bronze sculpture by Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) titled L'Immortalité, depicting  Hesiod and his muse. Hesiod was the poet who told the story of Pandora's Jar in approximately 650 BC. The classical oeuvre of myths and archetypes were popular subjects for painters and sculptors of the Beaux Arts period.  Gustave Moreau’s glorious oil of Hesiod and his muse, currently on exhibit in the Musee D’Orsay was painted in 1891. Lot 187 is A Pair of Louis XV Style Bronze Doré Chenets and Fender Depicting Bacchanalian Putti also late 19th /20th Century.

O’Sickey was the recipient of this year’s Ohio Governor’s Award for the Arts in the individual artist category, and was featured in a retrospective at the Canton Museum of Art in an exhibit of 160 works, “Joseph O’Sickey: Unifying Art, Life and Love”.  O’Sickey passed away on July 22, 2013 at the age of 94. He was a much loved artist and teacher, and Gray’s is delighted to be presenting these works at auction.
