One of the UK’s largest privately-owned art dealerships, Haynes Fine Art, has opened a new gallery at 70 Pimlico Road, on the borders of Belgravia and Chelsea in London.  Focusing on modern and contemporary art, the gallery’s launch exhibition from 3rd November to 7th December 2016 features a collection of rare and previously unseen works by Pop Art legend Andy Warhol.  

Pimlico Road Design District, London SW1 is the capital’s premier destination for interior design and art, close to Sloane Square, Knightsbridge and Buckingham Palace.

Tony Haynes, Managing Director of Haynes Fine Art, has brought together some 27 original works by Andy Warhol for this very special opening exhibition in London.  Many come directly from the Warhol Foundation and are fresh to the market.

The works include a group of 1950s drawings and illustrations, rare Polaroid portraits and unique gelatin silver photographs of 1980s celebrities, each in their own way revealing Warhol’s sense of curiosity and far-roaming eye.

The early drawings include a number of original illustrations for a 1956 book by Warhol called ‘In the Bottom of my Garden’, a work that begins to blend his experiences in commercial art with his own developing ideas and skills as a fine art draughtsman.  The decorative and whimsical illustrations feature his very own ‘blotted line’ drawing technique and “what would end up being themes in his later pop work: androgynous ‘fairies’, flowers, and of course sex.” [The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh]  Other drawings depict fashion, flowers, footwear, animals and birds, abstract works, and female figures, executed in ink, tempera, watercolour and ballpoint pen – a medium frequently used by Warhol for sketching.

Andy Warhol was a talented photographer with a great eye for detail and composition; he wielded the camera in his compulsive desire to document the time in which he lived.  Warhol often used his photographs as the basis for commissioned portraits, silkscreen paintings, drawing and prints.  The Haynes Fine Art exhibition at Pimlico Road includes a stunning shot of Debbie Harry at the height of her Blondie fame, Simon Le Bon in 1982 as Duran Duran were dominating the charts, and other famous faces of the 1980s including Sylvester Stallone in pin-up stance, The Jacksons, Don King and Ozzy Osbourne.
