New England painter John Hare was born in Brooklyn, New York and studied commercial art at the Pratt Institute (NYC) and later at the Art Students League (Manhattan, NYC) and the Grand Central School of Art (NYC) followed by employment with the Hearst Newspaper Corporation. For a number of years after his marriage in 1933, John Cuthbert Hare and his wife traveled throughout the United States and Europe. Hare was a member of the Provincetown Art Colony, Cape Cod, Massachusetts and was to become known as the "Dean of Cape Cod Artists". The Hares first visited the artists' colony in St. Augustine, FL in 1935 and again in 1937, at which time he joined the St. Augustine Art Associations and set up a studio. Circa 1938 they moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, but Hare traveled to Gloucester (MA) where he painted coastal scenes. In 1967 they were back on Cape Cod at Yarmouthport. In 1977 they made their final move to Palm Beach, FL.
