REVISITING BADU - CALIFORNIA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM
- October 18, 2020 08:38
AS I AM IN NEOTIATIONS WITH TWO MAJOR
WORLD-CLASS MUSEUMS, I AM INSPIRED TO REVISIT
BADU, 2014, A TRIBAL/PRIMITIVISM ARTWORK
CREATED EXLUSIVELY FOR MY TWICE HELD OVER EXHIBIT
AT THE CALIFORNIA AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM THAT
SUCCEEDED THE FINAL EXHIBIT OF GEOFFREY HOLDER
WHILE HE WAS STILL WITH US, ALONG WITH HIS BELOVED
CARMEN DE LAVALLADE. I CAN'T EXPRESS TO YOU HOW THAT
FELT BEING GEOFFREY AND CARMEN WAS ON THE BOARD OF
A FASHION EVENT KILGOUR AND SWEET HAUTE COUTURE
PARTICIPATED IN AT THE FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
UNDER THE TUTELAGE OF AUDREY SMALTZ. OUR DESIGNS
WERE WORN BY PAT CLEVELAND, BILLIE BLAIR AND IMAN,
WE ALSO DRESSED AUDREY TO THE HIGH COMPLIMENTS
OF EUNICE JOHNSON. HER HAIR, BY MR. FRENCHIE AND
MAKEUP BY ALFONSO GRUNDY. BACK TO BADU, SHE IS RENDERED
IN SENNELIER OIL DEVELOPED FOR PABLO PICASSO IN 1949.
IT MEASURES 36 INCHES WIDE AND 48 INCHES HEIGHT.
CURRENTLY I AM DEEPLY SUBMERGED IN TRIBALISM ARTWORKS
INTERMIXED WITH CUBISM AND NEOEXPRESSIONISM. AT TIMES,
A TOUCH OF FAUVISM. ABSTRACT FIGURATIVE. SUCH IS ART.
