Left Front: Radical Art in the 'Red Decade,' 1929-1940

Grey Art Gallery, New York University, 100 Washington Square East, NYC.

Works by GEORGE BIDDLE, ISABEL BISHOP, BERNARDA BRYSON SHAHN, WERNER DREWES, BLANCHE GRAMBS, RIVA HELFOND, MITCHELL SIPORIN, HARRY STERNBERG, and LYND WARD, are featured, as well as the entire Gift to Biro-Bidjan portfolio, 1937.

Curators Jill Bugajski and John Murphy originated the show at Northwestern University. The artists were largely members of either the John Reed Clubs or the American Artists’ Congress, radical artists’ groups, yet the artistic range is vast. As Peter Schjeldahl wrote in the New Yorker review “Artists are hard to herd.”
