It’s Food Friday!
No recipes this week – as we were not concerned with cooking last week – just consuming all the best foods we could find in Charleston.
We had a splendid time at Hank’s. Yumsters. I had the fried chicken and it was quite simply the best I have ever eaten. The chicken was boneless, crisp and crunchy and sweet with the tang of buttermilk and fresh pepper. Had my grandmother come from Charleston I imagine she would have fried up batches of this chicken. It came with garlic mashed potatoes (also divine) and collards (which I moved around the plate, fooling no one).
Tall Boy and Best Beloved went for seafood, as they should since Hank’s is truly famous for what they can do with fish. The Tall One devoured grilled grouper and asparagus, and Best Beloved had pan seared sea scallops which came on a bed of frisée with some of the best bacon in the known world and a wedge of fried mashed potatoes. We sat at the community table and being naturally shy at first we conversed just among ourselves. Then, with the second terrific glass of Chardonnay, I started chatting with the man sitting next to me and Best Beloved saw a friend across the dining room, and suddenly it was old home week for everyone. If you happen to find yourself in Charleston, mosey on into Hank’s.
