Anniversary Lecture: Jean-Paul Viguier
Anniversary Lecture: Jean-Paul Viguier presents Modernity and Heritage: Contextual or Pastiche? To mark the fifth anniversary of the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, architect Jean-Paul Viguier’ returns to the McNay. Known for his sensitve designs where architecture blends within the landscape, Jean-Paul states, “...the temptation is to make archtiecture stronger than art. Designing a museum requires a lot of modesty.” In addition to designing the Steiren Center, Viguier completed the visitor centor and museum for the Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct near Nîmes, France, in 2000, and Medias Centre Jean Falala opposite Reims Cathedral in 2003. Both structures employ classical proportions so that modern materials of glass and steel blend harmoniously with ancient Roman and gothic cathedral architecture. Son of a Toulouse architect, Viguier obtained his architectural degree in 1970 from l’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and attended Harvard University on an Arthur Sachs fellowship, graduating in 1973 as a Master of City Planning and Urban Design. Tickets are available for McNay members $10, nonmembers $20, educators and students with an I.D. $5. UTSA students free.
