https://www.appraisersassociation.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=Calendar.eventDetail&eventID=1015
This program will explore a great era in public art
starting at Radio City in 1932, further developed
in federal programs (1933-1943) and culminating
in the New York Worlds Fair (1939-1941).
The Program will begin outside of Radio City
Music Hall, where Tom Folk, AAA, art historian
and appraiser will discuss the roundels by Hildreth
Meiere and Oscar Bach. The program will continue
inside of Radio City Music Hall for a guided tour.
Works by Stuart Davis, Yasuo Kuniyoshi,
William Zorach and Robert Laurent will be featured.
The program will continue at the Appraisers Association
office with three afternoon lectures. First Betty Krulik, AAA
will discuss the trends in 1930’s American Mural Paintings,
including Regionalism, Social Realism and Abstract American
Artists. She will also focus on how an appraiser should treat
valuation of mural paintings from the WPA (Works Progress
Administration), and other public art.
Next Tom Folk, AAA, will discuss American sculpture from
this period, focusing on the influence of Art Deco, but also
discussing works at Radio City, post office mural projects
and monumental pieces from the 1939 Worlds Fair.
The program will end with a lecture from Daile Kaplan, AAA,
Vice President and Director of Photographs at Swann Galleries.
Daile will discuss appraising Farm Security Administration
photographs. The FSA sent photojournalists, such as
Walker Evans and Dorothea Lang, to rural centers,
such as Appalachia and the Dust Bowl of the west.
