Masterworks of Grace and Gravity!

Moon Art Fair Hamburg is proud to welcome James Parrett

MOON ART FAIR HAMBURG is an international, curated art fair founded in 2020 that focuses on curatorial balance and integrity across all disciplines of contemporary art. MAF innovates the standard fair model by creating a hybrid concept selecting a curatorial team to identify, and curate a selection of galleries, artist-run exhibition spaces, and non-profit institutions and organizations, in dialogue with an architecturally designed venue: TheWestin Hamburg/ Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.

The summer edition of Moon Art Fair Hamburg takes place in TheWestin Hamburg/ Elbphilharmonie from 18-20 June 2021 with leading galleries and artists from across North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Africa. The exhibitors will present Modern and contemporary works by emerging and established artists, among them the sculptor James Parrett.

James Parrett, born 1976 in Melbourne (B.A. in Sculpture, Monash University and Victoria College of the Arts Melbourne) is a celebrated contemporary sculptor living and working in Eureka, Australia. Talking about his artworks he explains: "the fundamental idea of my sculptural practice is the desire to examine the aesthetic potential of the circular form." James Parrett has been a finalist in numerous sculpture prizes, created several solo exhibitions and awarded a number of commissions, most notably The Rabaul and Montevideo Maru memorial at the Australian War Memorial (Canberra 2012). The winner of the Montalto Winery sculpture prize in 2016 is also a recipient of the 2018 Aqualand sculpture prize, the major award at Sculpture by the Sea Bondi.

Parrett's vocabulary questions how form, curved lines, circles, the working process, steel, statics and philosophy can orbit one another. His monumental steel sculptures are pieces that roll and loop to carry visual tension, rendered visible with automotive paint, like giant brush strokes in the sky. Inspite of their enormous size and weight, their spirit is powerful and fragile at the same time, dancing lines in the landscape, masterworks of grace and gravity.
