Tobin Distinguished Lecture: Sir Roy Strong presents The 20th-century Coronation and its Legacy A leading expert in royal festivals and celebrations, Sir Roy Strong is an art historian, broadcaster, diarist, gardener, and writer, who has served as director of the National Portrait Gallery (1967–1973) and Victoria and Albert Museum (1974–1987), both in London. His talk focuses on the evolution of coronations and coincides with the exhibition Fiesta, Fête, Festival, which celebrates courtly and popular spectacles that transform urban spaces (from palace gardens to public squares) into a theatrical stage. Strong was educated at Queen Mary College, University of London, and the Warburg Institute. He authored Coronation: A History of Kingship and the British Monarchy, Feast: A History of Grand Eating, and The Renaissance Garden in England. In 1971, he married the distinguished designer Julia Trevelayn Oman, and they created a large formal garden at their home in Hereford.
