In honor of the special loan of Mary Cassatt’s Portrait of Madame X Dressed for the Matinée from the collection Charlotte and Philip Hanes of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, The Mint Museum has organized a spotlight exhibition. Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) was a pioneer in her field: she was the only American invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists and the first artist from this country to adopt their groundbreaking style and subject matter. This dashing three-quarter length portrait, executed soon after Cassatt met Edgar Degas, has been included in numerous important exhibitions around the world. This is the first time, however, that it has been on view in Charlotte. Complementing this striking painting will be selected objects drawn from the holdings of The Mint Museum’s collections of Decorative Arts and Historic Costume and Fashionable Dress that will illuminate the era in which Cassatt lived and worked.
