The series of Sotheby’s sales at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre have shown a strong appetite for wine, modern and contemporary art, traditional Chinese paintings, as well as the watches and jewelry in the Asian market.
Among the highlights so far this week, a 6.43-carat pink diamond set in a Van Cleef & Arpels ring, once owned by Princess Mary, daughter of Britain’s King George V, fetched HK$60 million ($7.7 million) in a record jewelry sale totalling HK$423 million with 70% of the 390 lots sold.
(Sotheby's has another rare pink diamond scheduled for auction in Geneva next month. This 'fancy intense pink' 24.78 carat gem, set by Harry Winston, could fetch US$38 million.)
The HK$407.3 million (US$52.5 million) sale of Chinese ink paintings on Oct. 5 was led by Fu Baoshi’s “Court Ladies,” depicting a Tang dynasty court woman and her maid which garnered HK$33.1 million.
Zhang Xiaogang's Chapter of a New Century – Birth of the People's Republic of China II sold for HK$52 million ($6.7 million) at the contemporary Asian sale.
Sales of Chinese ceramics and antiques, including sought-after imperial pieces, will continue this week.
