A 16.08-carat cushion-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond, the largest of its kind to ever appear at auction, brought an auction record for the category at Christie's in Geneva when it sold for $28.5m on Tuesday.
A Hong Kong bidder is reported to have renamed their purchase “The Sweet Josephine.” The massive pink gemstone was from an American collection and is one of only three such vivid pink diamonds to hit the auction block in 250 years of records.
Colored gemstones still have the limelight this week in Geneva, concurrently to the record-setting New York sales of modern and contemporary art. On Wednesday, the flawless 12.03-carat “Blue Moon” is expected to bring a record $55m.
