A former palace in Basra, Iraq, that belonged to Saddam Hussein will reportedly be remade into a museum this fall. The project is estimated to cost about $3.5 million and represents the first museum to open in the country for decades, according to an article in National Geographic.
Thirteen years after the U.S.-led invasion of the country, the new museum will display some 3,500 to 4,000 objects saved in vaults from Baghdad's Iraq Museum (which was looted in 2003), representing periods from ancient Sumer to Babylon and Assyria, and Islamic arts and artifacts. The British Museum is said to have offered free curatorial support.
Funds will be provided by the Basra government along with donations from oil companies and the U.K. charity called Friends of Basrah Museum.
