Rediscovered Rembrandt Goes From New Jersey Basement to Getty Exhibition

A tiny, discolored painting found by auctioneer John Nye of Nye & Co. in the basement of New Jersey home turned out to be worth far more than its $500 - $800 estimate. Art blogger Bendor Grosvenor first noted the possible significance of the work up for sale.
Reports the Los Angeles Times, the painting "would become the talk of the international art world after it was judged to be a long-lost work by the 17th century Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn." In fact, it is a very early work, "The Unconscious Patient (An Allegory of the Sense of Smell)," 1624, from the master's Senses series, and painted in his teengage years.
