A New Contemporary Art Museum Brings Culture 2.0 to Molenbeek District in Brussels

A new contemporary art museum has opened in the Molenbeek district neighborhood of Brussels, and it is being seen as a beacon of hope after the March terror attacks carried out in the city, in part, by homegrown extremists from that heavily Muslim neighborhood. The Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art was founded in a converted brewery along the canal in Brussels, and its website says "the MIMA’s mission is to be the defining museum of contemporary art."
Long lines of 4,000 people snaked outside for the April 15 opening of the museum, where MIMA says it "presents the most significant art of its time." With a focus on the present-day, organizers explain MIMA explores a history of culture 2.0.
On view through August 28 is City Lights, showing for the first time in a European institution, Swoon, Maya Hayuk, MOMO and the artistic duo FAILE, with works relating to the 1931 Charlie Chaplin film of the exhibition's name.
According to MIMA, "The temporary installation underlines the artist’s engagement with the public. Just like in city life, it prioritises the moment over the oeuvre.
This experience is often sought by those who understand the codes and values of a hyperconnected society ruled by a continuous flux of information. Authenticity, empathy, collaboration, sharing, transversality are the common characteristics of the artists of the CITY LIGHTS exhibition who themselves are rewriting our culture."
