Italian Consumer Group Files Complaint Against Christo's Floating Piers

The Italian consumer group Codacons announced on Monday that it would be filing a complaint to the Lombardy region's spending watchdog over the massive artwork on view there by 81-year-old artist Christo, reports AFP.
"The Floating Piers" has drawn throngs of visitors to a near-2 mile walkway of 200,000 floating cubes draped in golden fabric on Lake Iseo. It opened on June 18 and is expected to bring 500,000 visitors to the site over the course of its 16-day installation. However, some 270,000 showed up in the first 5 days. Closures during night time hours have been added.
Codacons is concerned about the costs and clean-up associated with the project which is free to the public. It deems the project a "waste of public resources."
"We want to know how much taxpayers' money has been spent on a project which, until now, seems to have generated enormous publicity for the artist without bringing direct benefits to local entities and citizens," Codacons said in a statement.
