Classical Modernist Scrolls Open Gianguan Auctions' September 15 Sale

Gianguan Auctions September 15  sale in two session  kicks off at 11:00 with  seventy-five classical scroll paiintings paintings.

 The highlight is Lot 15, a 1971 scroll by Chinese-American artist Walasse Ting entitled “Lotus and Peony.”  Born in Shanghai, Ting left China as a child. His career took him to Paris, New York and Amsterdam. Although informed by artistic movements of the mid-20th C., he is best known for colorful figurative paintings of nudes.   “Lotus and Peony” marks one of his rare forays into his Chinese heritage and blends classical techniques with ink splash.  The ink-on-paper painting carries one artist seal. The top of the scroll reads Entitled by Walasse Ting. Its estimate is $100,000 - $150,000.

Other modernist masters works that will come under the hammer are severa; by  Zhang Daqian's. The include Lot 16, “Portrait of Qu Yuan with His Poem, 1941 and  Lot 19, Magao Lady.  The collection features  Lot 20, “Lady,” Lot 24, “Splashed Lotus, 1946 and Lot 38, “Scholar in the Shade,” 1941). Pre-sale estimates run from $40,000 to $100,000.

The ever popular Qi Baishi is also represented by a collection. Included are Lot 17, ‘Mallard Ducks by the River Reeds” and Lot 57, “Alchemist,” 1924 ). The catalog estimate on these is $60,000 - $80,000.

Collectors of works by Zu Beihong will find interest in Lot 42, “Eagles on Rock, 1947. The ink-and-color on paper is expected to go at between $60,000 - $80,000.

In addition, the collection of scroll paintings includes works by ancient masters.Among the highlights are "Bird on Lotus," by Zhu Da (Bada Shanren).  Of the Qing Dynasty, the scroll is inscribed and signed Bada Shanren. It has one artist seal.  The painting is expected to go for a high of $1,200,000.
