Lawrence Fine Art will present a "master class" with esteemed American artist Knox Martin at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Wednesday, February 3. The event will be open to clients of the gallery only.
"Very often, the biggest barrier for the would-be collector is that he or she lacks context or the knowledge to feel confident of his or her judgement. This 'class', really a discussion, aims to help with that," explained Gallery Director Howard Shapiro.
Martin will choose two works as he explains how to view a painting, what makes great art and how certain works and artists have influenced him over his 60-plus-year career.
Martin is known both as a great artist and as a teacher of great artists. Robert Rauschenberg wrote of Martin: "You are my mentor. For years, I always asked, what would Knox think of my painting?" Martin continues to teach masters classes at the Art Students League as he has done for more than 40 years.
In 1954, Knox Martin's friend Franz Kline placed a painting of his in the Stable Gallery Annual. Charles Egan saw Knox Martin's painting at the Stable Gallery and asked Martin to show his work in a one-man show for the tenth anniversary of the renowned Charles Egan Gallery.
