The Curator’s Eye recently spoke with Schiller & Bodo European Paintings as leading dealers Lisa Schiller and Susan Bodo celebrated the sale of an important painting by Jules-Joseph Lefebvre (French, 1834-1911).
Schiller & Bodo reported, “The painting is by Lefebvre, who is best known as a romantic allegorical painter. This is an artist whose works we always endeavor to keep in our inventory, and this particular painting depicts a beautiful young woman, presumably as the biblical figure Rachel, the wife of Jacob who was renowned for her beauty.”
“We showed the piece on CuratorsEye.com earlier this year, and it led us to a new relationship with a collector we didn’t know before.”
Schiller & Bodo were among the first painting specialists to exhibit on The Curator’s Eye. While they have their own carefully designed website, they chose to expand their online presence with The Curator’s Eye. The dealer pair explained, “One of the major changes we see in the trade is that collectors increasingly go online. If they’re there, we need to be there, too.”
“CuratorsEye.com helps stage our paintings in a manner that does not compromise collectors’ viewing experience. It’s like exhibiting at a high-end show 24/7 and 365 days for an enduring exposure to a global audience.”
According to Deloitte’s Art Market Report, “the art market is going through a major transformation, in terms of its geographical reach and structure, [and] the way that the internet, technology and information are changing how art is promoted, valued and transacted.” The Curator’s Eye exists to help dealers compete with market leaders Christie’s and Sotheby’s by giving them access to the same clients that traffic the auction houses and high end art shows, but through an online structure. Individually, it is extremely difficult for dealers to achieve the branding and critical mass that drives site traffic on the internet.
Lisa Schiller and Susan Bodo are co-owners of their namesake gallery. The gallery specializes in 19th Century European paintings, with emphasis on works from the French Academic, Realist, Barbizon and Post-Impressionist traditions, and is located in an Upper East Side townhouse in New York.
As the art world expands into emerging markets and younger generations do more and more research online, The Curator’s Eye is poised to facilitate these initial virtual connections. Today, collectors from Monaco, India, France, Brazil, and Russia are among the registered users from over eighty countries.
