Morten Lassen’s fourth solo exhibition (through Nov. 7) in London at the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery – titled Mindscapes – provides a window on to the artist’s thoughts and creative concerns. Although each painting is guided by principles of balance, contrast, composition, colour and texture, these formal elements combine to express, in visual terms, Lassen’s engagement with the contemporary world.
Each painting undergoes multiple phases - from pure intuition and spontaneity to measured and calculated refinement - from excitement to disillusion and back again.
"Some paintings almost paint themselves and some I struggle with for a long time before they are finished. It is a long journey from start to finish, but it is the journey that makes the painting. Every brushstroke informs the next," says Lassen.
In Mindscapes, Lassen continues to explore his familiar theme of the interaction between the organic world and the digital world. His paintings – with their densely worked surfaces, shifting colourscapes and lurking grid structures - capture both the tension and the synergy between these two very different forces.
Based in Copenhagen, Morten Lassen has exhibited extensively in the UK, Europe and Australia. His work is held in many public and corporate collections including Danske Advokater; the Ministry of the Interior and Health; IBO, Herlev; Den Danske Bank, Haderslev and Ålborg Universitet.
