FISHER HERITAGE

Temperatures are dropping, and in case global warming foists a horrid winter upon us this year, prepare to snuggle up in beauty, warmth, and history by gifting y0urself or loved ones with an historic jacquard, doublecloth, or overshot coverlet from FISHER HERITAGE.

Since beginning her Americana gallery, Laura Fisher has been a rare resource for a wide selection of coverlets for architects and designers who favor these graphic, handsome alternative bedcoverings for interiors. For the holidays Fisher is offering her collection at 20% off in anticipation of relocating her gallery by Spring. Check the website or inquire directly to see examples in varied weaves and colors.

Dating from the second and third quarters of the 19th century – you read correctly, 1840s to 1860s for most – these intricately woven coverlets are a prime testament not only to graphic intricacy but also to durability, having survived more than a century of cold winters and informal handling.

Jacquard coverlet history is especially well documented, with New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana the centers for coverlet production where dozens of weavers have been identified. Made with a cotton warp and wool weft, often in two panels sewn together at the center, coverlet colors include indigo, cadet blue, red, green, and occasionally bittersweet, ochre, brown, and violet.

Today, handmade antique textiles are gaining widespread appreciation through museum shows, literature, and in the marketplace. Consider adding a handsome textile that is also a true American antique to your own or a client’s home.
