Taking the best of the 1950s and bringing it into the present has become the specialty of Clarke Auction in recent months. Theoretically, time travel has not been invented, but Clarke Auction certainly comes close by bringing midcentury back to the future. Firing up their flux capacitors for Sunday November 18th at 2pm are the top design names of Paul Evans, Mira Nakashima, Eero Aarnio, Paul Kjaerholm, Paul McCobb, Harry Bertoia, Bruno Matheson, Vladimir Kagan, and Karl Springer.

                Hoping to prove that lightning strikes twice, not only on clock towers, but at auctions as well, Paul Evans leads the midcentury selection after great success in Clarke’s previous sales. In the November 18th sale, a large signed and dated Paul Evans console with slate top is the predominant lot.  The console features a stunning gilt and patchwork steel exterior that would rival even the most industrial of Doc Brown’s inventions.

                The gilded steel designs incorporated in the Evans console parallel a magnificent piece of art by Harry Bertoia featured at Clarke’s upcoming sale. The Harry Bertoia Sculptural Panel is a bronze plaque on a custom stand.

                Another highly important selection in the midcentury collection on November 18th is a set of eight Mira Nakashima Conoid Chairs. Each chair is signed, dated, and include solid wood seat construction under a spindle back, with some including exquisite butterfly joints on the seat seam. The chairs are constructed from gorgeous exotic woods (not Twin Pines).

                If traveling to the 1950s required a space craft rather than a Delorean, Eero Aarnio for Asko’s Ball Chairs would serve as the perfect escape pods. The brilliant blue cushioning throughout the interior of the half globe white structure provide comfort and contrast, creating a style that transcends time. Each chair frame sits atop a swivel base, allowing full view of the universe on a spinning axis.

                When earthbound and lounging in wing-tip Nikes like Marty McFly, a more grounded chair might serve a better purpose.  The Bruno Matheson Lounge chair and a pair of Paul Kjaerholm chairs are great places to rest in style after shutting down the hover board.  If surfing is more appealing than hovering, the midcentury Surfboard Table in the sale would be a choice addition to any futuristic home.

                One of the most impressive and striking lots in the upcoming November 18th sale at Clarke Auction is the pair of large Shagreen Table Lamps, possibly by designer Karl Springer. The spherical lamp bases with solid pyramid shades are undeniably unique, and would provide ample light when studying Gray’s Sports Almanac with Biff.

                Not only stopping at the 1950s, but traveling farther back in time, Clarke Auction is offering numerous important lots of sterling and glass from other eras. The Sterling selection includes an English or Irish Tazza, a full five piece Alvin tea set, a Tiffany Gorham bowl lot, various lots of sterling jewelry, and many more sterling silver items.

                In the upcoming November 18th sale, Tiffany Favrile makes up over ten lots of multiple items each,. There are numerous L.C. Tiffany Favrile glass lots that include a set of footed sherbets, a beautiful compote, glasses, porringers, cups, saucers, and more.
